Produce OASIS Tip of the Day

July 25 - Plum Selection Tips:

In general, good-quality plums will be fairly firm to slightly soft with smooth skin.

Avoid product with wrinkled, punctured or rough skin. Also avoid product that is extremely hard or has brown skin discolorations.

Although plums are native to Asia, Europe and America, most U. S. production is in the Japanese varieties which are red and yellow (European varieties are blue and purple).
  • Santa Rosa plums will be an even red.
  • Casselman plums will be an even red.
  • Laroda plums will have a yellow background with a medium-red blush.
  • Kelsey plums will usually be green in the store, but will turn yellow-red when ripe.
  • Red Beaut plums will be an even red.
  • Black Beaut plums will be an even deep-purple.
  • Friar plums will be an even, deep-black when ripe. (Friar plums are a excellent value because they have a very small pit for their size.)

OASIS has much more information on soft fruit.
