Each day Produce Oasis has a new Tip of the Day featuring your favorite fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs and spices.

August 19 - Carambola Use & Season:

Carambola (star fruit) is eaten fresh, used in salads and juiced. There are two varieties - sweet and tart. The tart variety is cooked and used in jams and jellies. Carambola is rich in vitamin C and juice which is used to make wine. In Burma, Carambola is used to make Tea Pickle.

Carambola is called Star Fruit because when sliced, the cut sections resemble a five-pointed star.

Carambola is Available August through February. Production is centered in Florida, the Caribbean, Hawaii and California.

OASIS has much more information on tropical fruit.
