August 19 - Carambola Use & Season:
Carambola (star fruit) is eaten fresh, used in salads and juiced. There are two varieties - sweet and tart. The tart variety is cooked and used in jams and jellies.
Carambola is rich in vitamin C and juice which is used to make wine. In Burma, Carambola is used to make Tea Pickle.
Carambola is called Star Fruit because when sliced, the cut sections resemble a five-pointed star.
Carambola is Available August through February. Production is centered in Florida, the Caribbean, Hawaii and California.
