Scientific Binomial Name: Cucumis metuliferus
Eaten raw or in beverages.
Good for juicing due to mildly tart nature.
Also known as horned Melon, African horned cucumber or hedged gourd, good-quality kiwano will be golden-orange when ripe.
Avoid product that is overly soft or has tender, discolored areas.
Kiwano has an excellent shelf life and can be stored for weeks at room temperature.
Kiwano will not ripen well after picking - it should be allowed to ripen on the vine.
Kiwano is low in fat, cholesterol, and sodium. It's also a good source of vitamin C.
Also known as African horned melon, kiwano has been known for over 3,000 years, but has only been sold commercially since late in the 20th century.
