Coconut, Young Selection Information | Nutritional Information | Tips & Trivia
Scientific Binomial Name: Cocos nucifera
Primarily used for the benefits of the water alone and consumed as a daily beverage. However, it is not uncommon to see the meat removed and mixed with the water or as one ingredient in a smoothie.
Used primarily for the coconut water itself, but the pulp can also be used in juicing and smoothies.
Choose Young coconuts that are heavy for their size and make sure to shake them. They should be so full of liquid that you can not hear it sloshing around inside. The water should be very clear and the meat very white.
Avoid drinking the water or eating the meat from a young coconut that is even slightly pink on the inside.
Coconut does not need to be refrigerated, but cold storage will not cause any harm either.
Coconut will not ripen after being picked.
