Mangosteen

MANGOSTEEN is nothing like a mango - and is one of the many reasons to book a flight to the Philippines!

The Mangosteen is nothing like a mango, but make sure you try this creamy-sweet, and slightly tart segmented tree fruit. The mangosteen is especially good when juiced or used in smoothies.

Selection Information

Usage: Although the thick skin keeps the fruit safe from bruising you should keep in mind that the size of the fruit is smaller than what you might think judging from the outside. With that in mind it is still on the all time favorite lists of anyone who has tried it.

Usually eaten out of hand, but this fantastic creamsicle of a fruit would be a great addition to any salad or smoothy. One segment usually contains a large seed so bite cautiously.

Selection & Storage: Choose each fruit by weight, picking the heaviest ones you can find, store them in the fridge for up to a week or more for optimal flavor and satisfaction.

Avoid: Remember that these fruits have a black to purple outer skin that can stain anything. Rip into a few and watch your hands turn purple.

Seasonal Information

Mangosteen is not available fresh in the U.S. however one may encounter these frozen year round at specialty stores.

Mangosteen Tips & Trivia

  • Looking for fresh Mangosteen? Don't bother looking in the US, as they are banned due to potential infestations that could harm other tropical crops. Try Canada as they are allowed items you will not see in the States due to the fact that they have no tropical crop to be infected by possible bugs on fresh fruits.
