While I think most would agree that local produce is better, local versus non-local isn't the whole story! We will never see a locally grown banana in Washington State, but the issue is more complicated and there isn't one right answer. I'm a firm believer that a well-informed customer is happier because they feel more confident in their decisions and personally invested in the results. With a few notable exceptions, most retailers do a poor job of giving you the information needed to make the best purchase decision for YOU. Let's take apples as an example. Many stores in the middle of June will advertise Washington Fuji apples, which are "great because they are locally grown". The Washington apple will taste fine, but all other things being equal (size and grade of the apple) you'll get a better eating experience (more crisp, juicy and flavorful) with the New Zealand Fuji. The reason is simple; In June, Washington apples have been off the tree for nearly 9 months, but New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere and their apples have been off the tree for only 3 to 4 months.
The "right" decision depends on the customer and that decision is personal. Our goal at Produce Oasis is to give you all the information so you can make the best decision for you and your family. If flavor is your primary goal, a New Zealand apple will generally give you a better eating experience in June. However, if carbon footprint and supporting local growers are your primary concerns, you will be happier with a Washington apple. If you are on the fence, I suggest this exercise next June; buy apples from both growing areas and sit down with your family & friends for a blind taste test and an honest discussion about the merits of locally grown produce. I can almost guarantee that you will end up having a great customer experience and feel better about your ultimate decision.
Finally, I want to emphasize that it will never be our intent at Produce Oasis to tell you one choice is better than another on a subject like locally grown. Our goal is to give you the information so you can make a better personal purchase decision. We also want to provide a forum to express your opinions - because listening is what helps keep Produce OASIS relevant. Please tell us what you think about this and any other produce issue - and thanks for visiting the Oasis!
